In a daring daylight robbery, miscreants posing as IT officials allegedly intercepted a van carrying cash for ATMs, threatened the staff and escaped with cash estimated to be over ₹7 crore.

According to police, the company vehicle was transporting cash from a private bank branch in J.P. Nagar when an SUV blocked its way. The accused allegedly claimed that they needed to “verify documents” and forced the staff to cooperate.

The robbers then allegedly made the staff sit inside their car along with the cash boxes and drove towards Dairy Circle. After reaching the spot, the gang abandoned the staff and fled with the money.

Special teams have been formed to launch a massive manhunt to track down the accused. The police have examined over 50 CCTV camera recordings and have alerted checkpoints across various routes.

Police said they have obtained vital information from the staff who were inside the cash van at the time of the incident.

They suspect it to be an insiders’ job as the driver of the van allegedly delayed informing the police and was giving a different version . It is also being probed why the armed security staff in the van did not use the weapons or resist.

“The police have put up nakabandi across the city. Different teams have been formed and dispatched to different locations. While one team is monitoring the control room, another is analysing technical details,” City Police Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh said.
