Minister for Animal Husbandry and Dairy Development J. Chinchurani on Wednesday inaugurated the State-level celebrations of National Milk Day organised by Milma where she recalled the immense services of Verghese Kurien, whose efforts fostered the growth of the country’s dairy sector and ensured the financial security of countless farmers. She highlighted Milma’s vital role in the State’s dairy growth, which has resulted in a sharp increase in both milk production and procurement, guaranteeing a consistent livelihood for dairy farmers over the past 45 years.

“Milma has always prioritised the welfare of dairy farmers by providing additional incentives, cattle subsidy, and other welfare schemes,” the Minister noted. She further added that in the last financial year, Milma returned 92.5 percent of its profits to dairy farmers through various welfare schemes and incentives.

Minister J. Chinchurani further elaborated on Milma’s operational success, stating that the cooperative has transformed into a prominent organisation with an impressive annual turnover of ₹4,327 crore. She highlighted its daily operations, noting that Milma procures approximately 1.25 million litres of milk per day and sells around 1.65 million litres per day. Furthermore, the Minister revealed a significant achievement that Milma has recorded a 14 percent increase in milk procurement from April to September this year, which is a record. Following the Minister’s address, Prof V.K. Ramachandran, vice chairperson of the State Planning Board, delivered the Dr. Verghese Kurien memorial lecture.
