Minister for Endowments Anam Ramanarayana Reddy released water from Somasila Reservoir into the Penna river after performing Jala Aarati with Gangamma Puja here on Sunday. On the occasion, he said: “As on today, the inflow to the reservoir is 32,971 cusec while the outflow is 13,400 cusec. Plans are in place to provide water to Rayalaseema, Nellore and Chittoor districts.”

“Only Nellore has the capacity to store 150 TMC of water, unlike the five surrounding districts. There is a possibility of more water coming into the Somasila reservoir through the rains in the months of October and November. Although the capacity of the reservoir has been increased to 77 TMC from the initial planned capacity, up to 74 TMC of water is being stored,” he said.

The Minister further said: “From today, 20 TMC of water is being released to Kandaleru reservoir, Telugu Ganga and Kanupuru canals. The capacity of Kandaleru is 45 TMC, and it will be filled in the next 15 days. The water will reach its full capacity. It will take time to increase the flood flow by 24,000 cusec.”

“Over one lakh cusec will be provided to the drought-affected mandals of Marripadu, Vinjamuru and Duttaluru. The works for providing water has been started and 60,000–70,000 acres of land will be irrigated through the High Power Canal,” he said, adding that the State government is preparing plans to set up temple tourism parks across the district as per the orders of the Chief Minister.
