With the international friendly match between Lionel Messi-led World Cup champions Argentina and Australia, originally scheduled for November 2025, officially called off, confusion prevails over the fate of the ongoing renovation works at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium in Kaloor. The stadium was supposed to host the match.

The stadium was handed over by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA), the owner of the venue, to the Sports Kerala Foundation (SKF) under the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, for renovation. It was to be returned to GCDA next month after the match.

Although the Reporter Broadcasting Corporation (RBC), the sponsor of Argentina’s proposed visit, claims that the team will play the match during the next international window, there is no official confirmation yet. RBC Managing Director Anto Augustine has consistently stated that the company is renovating the stadium with an investment of ₹70 crores.

While confirming that the match scheduled for November 17 has been cancelled, he insisted that renovation works will continue to make the stadium compliant with FIFA norms in preparation for hosting the match in the next window. He even described the postponement as a blessing in disguise, saying it would allow sufficient time to organise the event in a foolproof manner.

In a press release issued here, Mr. Augustine stated that the schedule for the match in the next window would be announced shortly and that the stadium would receive FIFA accreditation.

However, sources within GCDA clarified that there was no ₹70 crore estimate as such for the renovation. “Due to the limited time available for preparations, a committee comprising engineers from GCDA, SKF, and RBC used to approve proposed works on a case-by-case basis, and the investments for each were accounted accordingly. Now that the match has been officially called off, a decision regarding the ongoing renovation works must be taken at the State Government level, since the government was actively involved. It’s too early to comment, as the cancellation was confirmed only today,” they said.

Both GCDA and SKF sources hinted that renovation works may continue, though they declined to confirm it.

Salih Malappuram, admin of the WhatsApp collective Malappuram Argentina Fans, said the entire plan seemed doomed from the start. “We should have taken the announcement that the Messi-led Argentina team would come to Kerala with more than a pinch of salt. It seems like the fans have been taken for a ride,” he said.

Mr. Augustine had also announced that the stadium would have a capacity of 50,000 spectators for the match, which now stands cancelled, despite the fact that recent Indian Super League matches allowed only 35,000 spectators. Later, officials from SKF and the Public Works Department clarified that the seating capacity would be determined only after an assessment by experts, including those from IIT Palakkad.
