Speaker U.T. Khader has decided to convene a meeting of National Highways and PWD officials to examine the proposal of providing special FASTags to legislators to ensure easy access to toll roads.

The Speaker made this announcement following suggestion from Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar that special FASTags should be provided to legislators and MPs to help prevent any confusion over identity while entering the toll roads.

The issue was raised by Congress member S.N. Subba Reddy, who tabled a call attention notice, alleging that legislators are facing hardships and embarrassing moments at the toll booths to prove their identity though they have been given free access to use such roads.

His views were endorsed by members cutting across party lines. Leader of the Opposition R. Ashok expressed concern that though a toll booth was supposed to be reserved for the entry of ambulances and those who have been exempt from paying the toll like legislators/MPs, most of such reserved booths had remained closed.

The Speaker pointed out that there were different norms related to FASTags as they come under the purview of the Centre. Hence a meeting of officials would be convened to discuss the issue, he said.
