After two days of a massive hunt and political outrage over the murder of a Dalit woman and abduction of her daughter from a Meerut village, the accused was nabbed from Haridwar on Saturday (January 10, 2026) evening.
According to Vipin Tada, Senior Superintendent of Police, Meerut, along with the accused Paras Som, the girl was also safely rescued during a joint operation conducted by the Meerut and Saharanpur police.
The incident happened in Kapsad village of Meerut on Thursday (January 8, 2026) when a woman was grievously injured while trying to save her 22-year-old daughter from alleged abductors, triggering caste tension. When the mother succumbed to injuries on Thursday evening, Dalit activists and relatives of the victim demanded bulldozer action against the accused, who hail from the Rajput community.
The family refused to cremate the body and agreed only after hours of negotiation with the administration and political leaders.
Political slugfest
The incident spurred a political slugfest between the ruling party and the Opposition. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said mothers and daughters were not safe in U.P. under the BJP rule.
