A police party had a narrow escape when a person tried to open fire on them with a country-made pistol near Pandit Nehru Bus Station (PNBS) in Vijayawada on Saturday (March 7, 2026).
The incident occurred when police were searching a hotel as part of ‘Operation Vajra Prahar’ at the bus station.
“The accused tried to fire, but the trigger or the magazine clip might have got jammed, and the weapon did not fire. All the EAGLE and police parties, who participated in the operation are safe,” said Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) head and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ake Ravi Krishna.
EAGLE head constable, Manohar, and Task Force constable, Krishna, chased the accused up to some distance and took him into custody, the IGP told The Hindu. Police parties recovered a country-made pistol and bullets from the accused.
Police are trying to find out how and why he came to Vijayawada, his contacts, whether the accused was involved in any criminal activities in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana earlier, and other details.
“During investigation, it was revealed that the person who tried to open fire is from Telangana. The Krishnalanka police are investigating the case,” a police officer said.
