A 40-year-old man was killed in a wild gaur attack at Vilangad in Keralam’s Kozhikode district on Saturday. The victim was identified as Sunil, a native of Nadapuram. He was attacked while attempting to drive the animal away from an agricultural field along with the Forest department officials. The incident occurred around noon.

Sunil had joined the officials in trying to chase the gaur away after it entered a local farmland. The animal suddenly charged at him and attacked him before Sunil could escape. He was seriously injured in the attack and was rushed to the Kuttiady taluk hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. He was a court employee in Chengannur.

The incident took place while Sunil was at his native place for Onam holidays. Local residents said the encroachments by wild gaurs were creating trouble for farmers in the area. Power fences erected around some of the vulnerable spots were also found ineffective to prevent the animal, they said.
