A 45-year-old man reportedly poured a chemical and set himself on fire near Kengeri Railway Station on Wednesday afternoon, according to the police.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 1.45 p.m. The man was seen walking on the railway track towards Nayandahalli. He reportedly poured a petrol-like chemical on himself, set himself on fire, and ran in flames for a few minutes before collapsing.

A passenger at the station alerted the police control room. Onlookers rushed to rescue the man but were unable to save him as he had sustained severe burn injuries, the police said.

The Kengeri Railway Police reached the spot and found no identification documents or mobile phone, as everything was burnt and nothing could be retrieved. The body was shifted to Victoria Hospital for post-mortem.

A senior police officer said that the station master of Kengeri railway station filed a complaint, and an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) has been registered. Efforts are under way to establish the identity of the deceased and ascertain the reason behind the extreme act.

The police collected CCTV camera footage from in and around the area to track down the identity of victim. They are also checking with the residents to ascertain the victim’s identity.
