A 44-year-old man from Hosur was arrested by Vaniyambadi Town police in Tirupattur on Sunday for pledging fake five sovereigns of gold jewellery and taking ₹ 1.5 lakh cash from a pawn broker in the area a few days ago.

Police said the arrested person was identified as S. Madhavan, a mechanic from Hosur. Initial inquiry revealed that pawn broker R. Sait (47) was running a jewellery shop in Vaniyambadi town for many years.

On September 9, the suspect Madhavan met Sait at his jewellery shop. He gave a fake gold chain to the victim and requested cash to meet medical expenses of his family in the town.

During the initial check of the fake gold chain, Sait told police that the gold chain looked original and he gave ₹ 1.5 lakh in cash to the suspect. Later, he checked the gold chain again and found it was a gold-coated steel chain.

Immediately, Sait alerted Vaniyambadi Town police, who rushed to the spot. Police also analysed CCTV footage on the route and public places like bus terminus. After tracking the suspect through CCTV footage and mobile phone tower signals, police apprehended him at his hideout in Hosur town. A case was registered. The arrested person was lodged at sub-jail in Tirupattur town. A probe is under way.
