A 36-year-old man was arrested by the Tenali Rural police for allegedly murdering his wife with a knife following years of domestic disputes reported linked to his alcoholism and his suspicion over her character.
Guntur district Superintendent of Police Vakul Jindal on Wednesday said: “The accused, Mannepalli Narendra Babu, a resident of Angalakuduru village in Tenali mandal, was arrested for allegedly killing his wife Sandhya Rani on July 10.”
Narendra Babu, who runs a pan shop near a wine shop permit room at Chenchupet, had been married to Sandhya Rani since 2016. The couple had two sons aged 10 and eight.
According to the police, Narendra Babu was addicted to alcohol and frequently quarrelled with his wife over household expenses. He also suspected her for spending long hours on the phone and allegedly subjected her to physical and mental harassment. Investigators said he had earlier purchased a large knife and concealed it at home with the intention of killing her.
On the day of the incident, after returning home drunk, the accused allegedly argued with his wife. When she threatened to leave with the children, he allegedly then attacked her repeatedly with the knife in their bedroom, inflicting fatal injuries.
The accused also allegedly sustained injuries to his fingers during the attack. He later rode his blood-stained scooter to Tenali Rural Police Station and surrendered.
After receiving medical treatment, he was formally arrested on Wednesday. Police have seized the scooter used after the crime and booked him under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He was produced before a court for judicial remand.
