Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Monday described the visit of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to Delhi and related protests as a “planned drama” and said that the Bharatiya Janata Party won’t allow elections without a sanitised voter list.

During the day the West Bengal Chief Minister met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and alleged mistreatment at Nirvachan Sadan. Earlier on Monday, she claimed that the Delhi Police was harassing people at Banga Bhawan, particularly those who are sufferers of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal and were supposed to be part of the Trinamool delegation visiting the office of the Chief Election Commissioner.

“I thank the Delhi police for not falling for her drama. She [Mamata Banerjee] claimed that she rushed to Banga Bhavan without a change of clothes, but she did not forget to carry a microphone. Delhi is a sensitive area and if terrorists are found in parts of West Bengal, then police can search Banga Bhawan,” Mr. Adhikari said.

The BJP leader led a delegation to West Bengal Lok Bhawan and said the CM was trying to disrupt the SIR process so that the elections in the State are held on the basis of the voter list of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

“Disrupt the SIR process, if required, create law and order problems. Call Gyanesh Kumar, Vanish Kumar, and put pressure on Manoj Kumar Agarwal (CEO, West Bengal). And submit a petition before the Supreme Court demanding that the election be held on the 2024 voter list. Her [Chief Minister] conspiracy stands exposed,” Mr. Adhikari said.

The BJP leadership in the State has been demanding SIR to sanitise the voter list. After the first phase of SIR, about 58 lakh names from the voter list have been deleted, bringing the number of voters in the State to 7.08 crore. But the ongoing process has caused significant difficulty for the people of the State.

Mr Adhikari alleged that the Chief Minister has met the District Magistrates, who are also the District Electoral Officers, and has planned to harass the people so that their anger can be directed towards the ECI and the BJP.
