West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (October 7, 2025) met Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Khagen Murmu, who on Monday (October 6, 2025) sustained serious injuries when a mob attacked him at Nagrakata in North Bengal. Mr. Murmu was visiting flood affected areas with BJP MLA Sankar Ghosh when both the leaders came under attack.
“There is nothing serious. I have seen the report. He is under observation because he has high diabetes. There is an injury behind his ears…” the Chief Minister told media persons after visiting the MP at a hospital in Siliguri. Ms. Banerjee, however, did not pay visit to injured Mr. Ghosh who is the Chief Whip of BJP in the State Assembly.
Despite the attempt to reach out by the Chief Minister, the BJP leadership said that the not a single person was arrested in connection with the attack on MP. State BJP president Shamik Bhattacharya and Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari have claimed that people from a particular community were behind the attack.

Not only the BJP leaders of West Bengal but party leaders from Delhi including Prime Minister Narendra Modi took note of the attack on Mr. Murmu. The Prime Minister took to social media and said that the incident “highlights the insensitivity of the TMC as well as the absolutely pathetic law and order situation in the State”.
Mr. Modi expressed hope that the West Bengal government and the Trinamool Congress would be “more focused on helping people rather than indulging in violence in such a challenging situation”.
Responding to the remarks made by PM Modi, Ms. Banerjee said it was “unfortunate and deeply concerning that the Prime Minister of India has chosen to politicise a natural disaster without waiting for a proper investigation, especially while people in North Bengal are grappling with the aftermath of devastating floods and landslides”.
She claimed that the PM has blamed her party and the West Bengal Government outright without a shred of verified evidence, legal inquiry, or administrative report. Political violence is not rare in West Bengal but a war of words between the Chief Minister and the Prime Minister over social media is something which is not a regular phenomenon.
Another MLA targeted
On Tuesday (October 7, 2025), BJP MLA Manoj Kumar Oraon along with BJP workers faced protests and slogans by Trinamool Congress supporters at Kumargram. The vehicles in convoy of the BJP MLA were damaged but the MLA did not suffer any injuries. Supporters of the BJP MLA and Trinamool Congress were seen pushing each other when the MLA tried to distribute relief.

During the day BJP leadership held protests at different places in the city over attacks on its law makers. The Trinamool Congress described the Chief Minister’s visit as a gesture that “wasn’t one of formality, but of genuine concern, a reflection of her deep-rooted conviction that humanity must always come before politics.”
Meanwhile, in BJP ruled Tripura, a party office Trinamool Congress was attacked allegedly by BJP supporters triggering fresh tension among the political parties.
