A letter sent by a liquor company to former Excise Minister and current CPI(M) State secretary M.V. Govindan in 2021 has surfaced. The letter reportedly sheds light on the company’s efforts to secure a separate category for low-alcohol beverages in Kerala.

The document urged the State government to consider classifying low-alcohol drinks under a new category, and asserted that such products enjoy significant consumer demand, particularly in sectors linked to tourism.

Besides, it claimed that the unavailability of such beverages in Kerala prompted many events to be held in destinations such as Goa and Puducherry.

Mr. Govindan forwarded the letter to the Principal Secretary, Taxes, to prepare a proposal and submit recommendations.
