Light to moderate rain forecast for Chennai, surrounding districts

After a night of rains accompanied by lightning and thunder in Chennai, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted light to moderate rainfall over isolated places in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Villupuram and Ranipet districts till 1 p.m. on Tuesday (September 16, 2025).

Though Chennai city remained dry during the daytime on Monday, many areas witnessed rainfall around 2 a.m. on Tuesday. According to data provided by the RMC here, in the period commencing 8.30 a.m. on Sunday and ending at 5.30 a.m. on Monday, Nungambakkam recorded 42.8 mm of rainfall, Meenambakkam received 10.9 mm, Ennore Port registered 14.5 mm, Mamallapuram witnessed 11 mm, and VIT Chennai recorded 17.5 mm.

Other stations including Virinjipuram KVK in Vellore recorded 47 mm, Hindustan University 46 mm, NIOT Pallikaranai 34.3 mm, Tambaram 45 mm, Puzhal 25.5 mm, Nandanam 25 mm, Anna University 22 mm, Villivakkam in Tiruvallur district 24.5 mm, Cheyyar in Tiruvannamalai 14.5 mm, R.K. Pet in Tiruvallur 13.5 mm, Poonamallee 12 mm, and ACS Medical College 10.5 mm.

The RMC had forecast rainfall till Thursday (September 18) over isolated places in several districts of Tamil Nadu under the influence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Bay of Bengal that now extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.
