A leopard fell into a trap set by a farmer for wild boars on his agricultural land in Maloor, Kannur, Kerala, on Thursday, Forest officials said.

According to Forest officials, the incident took place on the agricultural land of one Ramakrishnan.

Officials said the farmer had set the trap after wild boars repeatedly raided his crops.

However, in the early morning, locals noticed an unusual noise and, upon checking the area, found a leopard caught in the trap.

The Kottiyoor Forest Range Office was soon informed, officials said.

Officials said the leopard would have to be tranquilised to free it from the trap.

After examining the health condition of the wild animal, a decision will be taken on whether to release it in the forest, they said.

The Forest Department will also investigate the trap set by the farmer.

Officials said that as the area is close to the forest, wild animals frequently stray into agricultural land.
