The Left Democratic Front (LDF) will script a sparkling victory in the 2025 local body elections, CPI State secretary Binoy Viswam said here on Wednesday.
Mr. Viswam was participating in the ‘Thaddhesha Thantram’ meet-the-press programme organised by the Kesari Memorial Journalists’ Trust in the run-up to the 2025 local body elections. The LDF stands united and its machinery is fully prepared for the elections, he said.
The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) had trailed way behind the LDF in the 2020 elections and there is no change in this situation today. The UDF stands considerably weakened, while the LDF has further consolidated its position on the strength of its clarity of ideology and steadfast conviction that it will stand with the people always, he said.
Mr. Viswam accused the Congress and the UDF of forcing covert alliances with, on the one hand, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and, on the other, the Jamaat-e-Islami.
“In the last elections, LDF won 582 of the 941 grama panchayats, 113 of the 152 block panchayats, 44 of the 87 municipalities, 13 of the 14 district panchayats and 5 out of six corporations. The LDF had a visible upper hand (in 2020),” he said, adding that a repetition of the LDF performance in 2025 is a certainty.
“Because the UDF is also aware of this, we foresee that it will, as usual, create an indirect nexus with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP),” Mr. Viswam said. The Congress had also forged tie-ups with organisations such as the RSS, SDPI and Jamaat-e-Islami, he said.
On the decision of the CPI to field a former RSS man as one of its candidates in one of the Thiruvananthapuram corporation wards, Mr. Viswam said he had shed the RSS ideology, recognising it as the wrong path. “Communists have always welcomed such changes in realisation,” he said.
Mr. Viswam also added that the CPI should get its eligible share of the increase in the number of wards following the ward delimitation.
