LDF tightens three-decade grip on Nedumangad municipality

The Left Democratic Front (LDF) scored a commanding victory in the Nedumangad municipality by winning 29 out of the 42 wards. The result cemented the CPI(M)-led coalition’s three-decades-long hold on the local body.

The UDF secured victory in 10 wards, while the BJP managed to win only three.

Senior CPI(M) leaders who contested the elections recorded emphatic wins. CPI(M) district committee member R. Jayadevan, who is tipped to helm the municipality, won from the Pulippara ward. Besides, the party’s area committee members P. Harikesan Nair, S.S. Biju, R. Madhu, M. Sreekesh and outgoing chairperson C.S. Sreeja also secured convincing victories.

Interestingly, CPI(M) alone could secure the seat tally required for a simple majority. Under such circumstances, it remains to be seen if the party shares the vice-chairman position with the CPI.

Five years ago, CPI(M) sprung a surprise by going back on its pre-poll promise to field its candidate for the post of vice-chairperson. While Mr. Harikesan Nair emerged victorious by defeating CPI’s S. Raveendran, he later had to tender his resignation after the CPI(M) State leadership intervened to restore peace within the Left alliance.

Despite winning two seats more than in the 2020 elections, Congress finished third in as many as 15 wards. Besides, in several wards, Congress candidates polled less than 100 votes. BJP suffered a major setback as all four of its sitting councillors were defeated.

Soon after the results began to trickle in, celebrations erupted across the Nedumangad town as LDF supporters took out victory processions. Food and Civil Supplies Minister G. R. Anil led the celebrations.
