Engineers’ Day to be State event; govt. allows prefix ‘Er’ to names

The Karnataka government on Tuesday made celebration of Engineers Day, which marks the birth anniversary of the former Dewan of Mysore Princely State the late Sir M. Visvesvaraya on September 15, an official event of the State. Besides, close on the heels of allowing teachers to use the prefix “Tr.”, the State government has officially allowed use of prefix “Er.” for engineers.

The order said that to honour the invaluable contribution of engineers for development of the country and economic progress, the government has allowed use of prefix Er. , and making the celebration of Engineers Day on September 15 an official event.

The Government Order to this effect came hours after Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that he had approved a proposal for the State to officially celebrate the Engineers Day. Last week, the Congress MLC B.S. Shivanna had urged the government to allow Er. for engineers and Lr. for lecturers. He has welcomed the Government’s decision to allowing the engineers to officially use prefix Er.

“Annually, more than one lakh engineers graduate in the State. India has the highest number of engineers and it is important to recognise them. The finer details of official celebration of Engineers Day will be drawn after discussion,” the Chief Minister said after garlanding the statue of Sir M. Visvesvaraya here. Engineers Day is celebrated on September 15 to mark his birth anniversary.

Offering rich tributes to the late technocrat, he said that Sir M. Visvesvaraya is a model to the country and his contribution to Karnataka is immense.
