The Left Democratic Front (LDF) is jubilant about a potential win in 10 wards in Kannur and Kasaragod districts nearly two weeks before the voting day in the local body elections.

On Friday, the last day for filing nominations, LDF candidates stood unopposed in six wards across Anthoor municipality and Malapattam and Kannapuram grama panchayats in Kannur district. Their victories will be officially declared once the deadline for withdrawal of nominations expires.

The LDF claimed to have won four additional wards on Saturday after the nominations of United Democratic Front (UDF) candidates were rejected during scrutiny in one ward in Malapattam and two wards in Kannapuram panchayat. In a ward in Kasaragod’s Madikkai grama panchayat, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate’s nomination was rejected.

While the LDF celebrated the outcomes, Kannur District Congress Committee (DCC) president Martin George criticised the rejections in Anthoor and Malapattam, alleging foul play to favour LDF candidates.
