COIMBATORE

A missile launcher developed by Coimbatore-based medium-scale enterprise MAK Controls and Systems has been inducted into the Akash – New Generation (Akash – NG) Missile Programme after full-fledged trials in December 2025.

Saravanan Manickam, Managing Director of MAK Controls and Systems, and P.S. Sundaram, its Executive Vice-President, told the media on Saturday that the cost for this project for the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) is ₹2.5 crore and it was completed by MAK in two years.

The Acceptance of Necessity is expected to be formalised for 10 firing units so that MAK can produce the launcher on a commercial scale. The process is likely to take about two years. “We are an organically grown company and we do not have to make any major investment to produce the launcher on a large scale,” Mr. Saravanan said. It was developed at the Karur unit of the company and will be produced there.

MAK spent totally ₹10 crore on the project and took about four years in total as it was supplying mainly power systems for the Defence. It first had to develop a prototype to prove its capabilities and after getting approval for the prototype, it developed the launcher.

There are multiple support equipment that are required for this programme. For instance, the six-cannister launcher needs a high mobility vehicle and cannisters. The loading and unloading of the missiles is also a critical operation. The company is now looking at developing some of the related product lines.

The DRDO has multiple programmes and MAK will explore opportunities for launchers in these programmes too, they added.
