The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will roll out ‘pink bus’ services for women on trial basis on major routes in Kerala as part of the 100-day programme of the State government. The inauguration of the project will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Thiruvananthapuram depot by Transport Minister C.P. John .

According to a statement by the office of the Transport Minister, there are not enough ordinary KSRTC bus services for women passengers arriving in the city after 9 pm including for hospital staff, late night cinema goers, women passengers comprising patients and their bystanders who reach at Thampanoor railway station at night. Due to this, they are forced to pay exorbitant charges for auto-rickshaws and other services.

In addition, the IT employees’ organisation ‘Prathidhwani’ had also written a letter to the State government seeking measures to address the travel woes of the women employees who work in 10 p.m.-5 a.m. shifts. Therefore, it was decided to operate the pink bus service on the Thiruvananthapuram-TechnoPark route on a trial basis initially, the statement said.

The schedule has been worked out in such a way that the service will run via East Fort, Thampanoor, Pattom, Medical College (RCC), Ulloor, Kazhakuttam, Technopark, Infosys, Lulu Mall and KIMS Hospital. To ensure the punctuality of services and increase revenue, online reservation facility and the use of electric buses in the future are also being considered. The latest Link Fast passenger buses have been allotted to operate services from Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam depots for the project, said the statement.
