The Government Medical College (GMC), Kozhikode, has been ranked 20th among the top 144 government medical institutions in the country in this year’s Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) and the first in Kerala.
The IIRF is a private organisation set up in 2015 that publishes annual rankings of higher education institutions. Its ranking is based on nine broad parameters – academic reputation, graduate outcomes and employability, research outcomes, demand ratio and student profile, employer reputation and international outlook, well-being and institutional development, peer perception and alumni feedback, public perception and data verification, and impact and value addition.
The Kozhikode medical college scored 156.03 in teaching, learning resources and pedagogy, 156.67 in research outcomes, 153.75 in innovative medical infrastructure, 153.93 in social inclusion, 151.10 in future orientation, and 149.07 in external perception. Overall weighted index out of 1,000 is 926.74.
The GMC, Thiruvananthapuram, is ranked 41 across the country and the second in the State. The GMC, Kottayam, is in the 66th position and third in the State. T.D. Medical College, Alappuzha, is in the 86th position and fourth in Kerala.

The rankings come at a time when the GMC, Kozhikode, is stepping into its 70th year of existence. It was founded on August 5, 1957, during the tenure of the first Communist-led government as the second medical college in Kerala.
K.N. Pisharoty was its first principal. Initially, the classes were held at the current Government General Hospital near the beach, before they were shifted to the present campus near Chevayur. From a 200-bed facility, the institution has grown into a hospital with over 3,000 beds. One of the highest number of deliveries in Asia, around 30,000 a year, are done here.
The number of graduate students in each batch is 250. The Institute for Maternal and Child Health was started in 1975 and the Savithri Saboo Memorial Cancer Institute and the Institute of Chest Diseases were set up thereafter.
The medical college, which was earlier affiliated with the University of Calicut, is now affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences.
