Deputy Superintendent of Police of Kodagu district in Karnataka, P. A. Suraj, suffered injuries during an outbreak of trouble at the Madikeri Dasara early on October 3.
A large crowd stormed the stage at Gandhi Maidan during the presentation of awards after the Dashamantapa procession, alleging discrimination in the selection process.
While the police was trying to clear the protestors from the stage, a person allegedly pushed Mr. Suraj down, leading to serious injuries, said Superintendent of Kodagu district police K. Ramarajan.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police was rushed to a hospital for treatment. “He is undergoing treatment for an injury in the head and a laceration on his leg,” said Mr. Ramarajan.
A person identified as Yakshit was taken into custody for allegedly pushing Mr. Suraj. He has been arrested and will be booked under Sections 132 and 355 of BNS 2023, said Mr. Ramarajan.
The Superintendent of Police said the award presentation ceremony of the Dashamantapas had been marked by complaints of discrimination on earlier occasions too. Hence, the police had suggested to the organisers not to give room for such trouble by giving prizes to all the mantapas.
