The Health department has identified the Kochi Corporation and a few neighbouring local bodies as hotspots for several communicable diseases.
As many as 83 dengue cases, 10 typhoid cases, 11 leptospirosis cases, 78 hepatitis A cases, 55 Influenza A cases, and 26 H1N1 cases were reported within the Corporation limits alone. The figures cover the period from January to June 2026.
A senior Health official said advisories had been issued urging people to remain vigilant against the spread of diseases. Programmes would also be organised for medical professionals to respond promptly to H1N1 and leptospirosis cases.
The district recorded nine deaths due to leptospirosis in July.
The other local bodies that have been reported as hotspots for multiple diseases are Kalamassery, Thrikkakkara, Thripunithura, and Kadungalloor.
Kadungalloor reported 13 dengue cases, two cases each of leptospirosis and typhoid, 163 hepatitis A cases, eight Influenza A cases, and 10 H1N1 cases. Kalamassery reported 45 dengue cases, five Influenza A cases, 39 hepatitis A cases, and three cases each of leptospirosis and typhoid. The number of typhoid cases in Thrikkakkara stood at four, hepatitis A at 12, Influenza A at 24, and dengue at 23. Meanwhile, Thripunithura recorded 30 dengue cases and 15 H1N1 cases.
With the district witnessing a jump in infectious diseases during the past two months, efforts are on to curb their spread by intensifying precautionary measures. The Health department and the district panchayat have charted out an epidemic prevention action plan to be implemented across local bodies in the district.
Kochi Corporation health standing committee chairperson Seena Gokulan said the reports of hotspots were being regularly shared by the Health department, and that awareness programmes and intensive measures were being adopted to prevent the spread of diseases.
“Recently, we observed that some areas of Edappally, Ponnurunni, and Chambakkara reported a rise in dengue cases. Intensive source-reduction activities are being taken up to eliminate mosquitoes. We are carrying out spraying and fogging activities while also targeting areas with high incidences of diseases to prevent outbreaks. Awareness campaigns are also being organised. Intensive precautionary measures are taken in association with the Health department,” said Ms. Gokulan.
She added that one of the major sources of mosquito breeding was water collected in indoor plant pots, and that the public should be aware of it and ensure that they do not create breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
