Amid simmering controversy over allegations of irregularities in Singareni tenders, Union Minister of Coal and Mines G. Kishan Reddy held a crucial meeting with SCCL officials in Kothagudem on Saturday evening.

He arrived at the head office of the State-owned company, as part of his maiden two-day visit to the coal town.

His visit to the coal town assumes significance in the backdrop of serious allegations of irregularities in SCCL tenders by the main Opposition BRS, a charge vehemently denied by the ruling Congress dispensation.

It comes amid vociferous demands by various quarters for a comprehensive inquiry or CBI probe into the allegations.

SCCL Chairman and Managing Director D. Krishna Bhaskar, Directors of the government coal mining company, and senior officials of the Ministry of Coal, were present.

Sources said that the SCCL officials apprised the Union Minister of the area-wise performance of the SCCL in terms of coal production and transportation besides the whole gamut of its operations including future growth plans.

The Union Minister is scheduled to interact with the representatives of the Singareni trade unions, coal contractors and other stakeholders in separate meetings in Kothagudem on Sunday. He will also visit the Koyagudem opencast mine in Tekulapalli mandal to take stock of the overburden removal operations.
