Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON) is the State government’s Internet service provider.
The Kerala Fibre Optic Network Limited (KFON), the Keralam government’s Internet service provider, is set to go in for a technical upgrade of its existing network for reliable and uninterrupted connectivity, as well as expand its project to ensure connectivity to tribal communities. The Electronics and Information Technology Department earlier this week accorded Administrative Sanction to the proposals.
An amount of ₹7.72 crore has been allocated this year for the scheme which aims to extend broadband connectivity to tribal communities by expanding KFON’s existing network infrastructure and to bridge the digital divide by providing access to Internet in remote and underserved tribal areas. The project is expected to create more opportunities for education, employment, entrepreneurship and livelihood enhancement in these areas.
For the technical upgrade of KFON network and training and support of last mile network providers, a total amount of ₹22.44 crore has been allocated. KFON, which has a fibre network across the State, depends on a large network of last mile providers including local cable operators. They are contracted to provide the connections from KFON’s Points of Presence (POPs) or the end points in the KFON network in each area to the respective households. Training programmes for last mile providers, including women and youth entrepreneurs, is aimed at ensuring better service at the household level.
The technical upgrade will also enable enhanced connectivity to underserved and rural areas through Mini-POPs. Rooftop or on-site solar power systems will be installed at identified KFON POPs based on priority and technical feasibility. This is expected to result in a significant reduction in recurring electricity expenditure and improved power reliability at KFON POPs.
