Amid a simmering political climate at the national and State level, the Keralam Legislative Assembly will convene for a nine-day session from October 12, 20206, which is expected to witness stormy confrontation between the ruling Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the Opposition Left Democratic Front (LDF) over a host of issues that have dominated the State’s political conversations over the past few weeks.

With the State Police likely to register an FIR on Monday (October 12, 2026) against Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan in the CMRL-Exalogic pay-off case, the ruling front is likely to raise the issue in the debates. The LDF will likely target Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan for allegedly accepting free chartered air travel sponsored by “unknown benefactors” and the use of a government-hired helicopter for alleged private travel, among accusations of opening the door for the Keralam Governor, who is also the Chancellor of State-funded universities, to stack the senate with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) sympathisers.

Power crisis

The LDF will also seek to put the government on the dock for continuing power cuts, medicine shortages in government hospitals, a shortage of Aravana at Sabarimala and the allegedly slow preparations for the Sabarimala Mandalam-Makaravilakku season. The LDF will likely object to the UDF government’s move to recall the Kerala State Private Universities Bill, 2025, currently under the consideration of the President of India, and replace it with another Bill seeking to open the higher education sector to private investment and foreign partnerships.

However, both the ruling front and the Opposition, except the three MLAs of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are likely to set aside their differences and vote unitedly supporting a resolution demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged discrepancies in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter’s lists. The Chief Minister is expected to move the resolution. Both the CPI(M) and the Congress leadership have taken active part in the ongoing protests in the national capital demanding the CEC’s removal.

For nine days

The Assembly will meet for nine days from October 12 to October 29, 2026, with breaks in-between. The approved schedule has two Bills for the House’s consideration—the Kerala Court Fees and Suits Valuation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, and the Madras Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
