Indicating more heavy rains, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has upgraded the rain alert for Kerala on Friday (September 26, 2025).
As per the latest update, an orange alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam and Idukki, where ‘very heavy category rainfall’ (115.5 to 204.4 mm of rain in 24 hours) is likely on Friday, while Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad districts were put on yellow alert, indicating heavy rains during the next 24 hours.
The upper cyclonic circulation prevailing over the Bay of Bengal is likely to take the shape of a low-pressure area on the day. It is expected to then intensify into a depression and move towards the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts by Saturday. After crossing the land, the remnants of the depression are likely to emerge in the northeast Arabian Sea off the south Gujarat coast as a low-pressure area by September 29.
The ongoing active spell of monsoon in Kerala is triggered by the weather system, and Kerala is poised to experience heavy rainfall for two more days, influenced by the system, according to the IMD.
Meanwhile, parts of Kerala witnessed heavy and very heavy rainfall in different parts of the State, especially in south and central Kerala, causing widespread damage and disrupting normal life.
Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district recorded the highest rainfall of 17 cm during the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Friday, followed by Thiruvananthapuram (15 cm), Peerumedu in Idukki district, and Lower Sholayar in Thrissur district with 14 cm each, and Pirappancode in Thiruvananthapuram, Karumadi in Alapuzha, and Chacka in Thiruvananthapuram with 11 cm each.
Yellow alert for river
The State Irrigation department has declared a ‘yellow alert’ in Achankovil River (Konni G D station) following the heavy rain and rising water level in the river. Those living on the banks of these rivers should be cautious and should not enter the river or cross the river under any circumstances.
People should be prepared to move away from flood-prone areas as per the instructions of the authorities, said the State Disaster Management Authority.
