Kerala rain 2026: Rain eases in Thrissur, relief camps continue

Monsoon rain has eased across Thrissur district, but the administration remains on alert as controlled water is being released from the Poringalkuthu dam, prompting a warning for residents along the Chalakudy river, and fresh evacuations have been ordered in a landslip-prone area near the Puthur Zoological Park. As of now, 59 people continue to stay in relief camps in the district.

According to the district administration, five relief camps were functioning across the district as of 12 noon on Wednesday, accommodating 19 families. The residents include 30 men, 20 women and nine children, including 18 senior citizens. The relief camp at Nellayi JUPS has been closed.

Three camps are operating in Mukundapuram taluk, sheltering five families with 15 people. Two camps are functioning in Thrissur taluk, housing 14 families and 44 people, with the Government Polytechnic camp at Nedupuzha accounting for the largest number of evacuees.

The district administration has also issued a caution for people living along the banks of the Chalakudy river after the water level in the Poringalkuthu dam touched its crest level of 419.40 m. The dam’s crest gates have been kept open to regulate the reservoir level, resulting in additional discharge into the river. Residents in low-lying areas along the river have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid entering the river or flood-prone areas.

Meanwhile, the administration has ordered the evacuation of three families from the Anakkuzhi-Thonippara area at Kainoor, near the Puthur Zoological Park, following an increased threat of landslips.

The decision was taken after District Collector Shikha Surendran and K. Rajan, MLA, visited the site. The functioning of a nearby anganwadi has also been suspended temporarily as a precaution.

Concern intensified after three large trees were uprooted with a loud rumble from the hilltop overlooking the settlement on Tuesday night, raising fears of a possible landslip. Officials said the evacuation was ordered to eliminate the risk to human life while the area is monitored for further ground movement.
