Expelled IUML leader A. Irshad Chakkalassery, accused of making derogatory remarks against CPI(M) MLA U. Prathibha, was arrested and released on bail in Kayamkulam in Alappuzha, Kerala, the police said on Friday (March 27, 2026).

According to the police, a case was registered against Mr. Chakkalassery on Thursday night following a complaint filed by Ms. Prathibha. He was taken into custody, and his arrest was recorded, officials said. As the charges invoked were bailable, he was released on bail, the police added.

The police also said that the Election Commission had directed registration of a case after finding that Mr. Chakkalassery’s remarks violated the Model Code of Conduct.

However, the case was registered on the basis of Ms. Prathibha’s complaint.

A local IUML leader and UDF convener in Kayamkulam, Mr. Chakkalassery allegedly made objectionable remarks about Ms. Prathibha during a campaign event.

He also accused the MLA of “failing” to work for the people.

Following the controversy, he was removed from the party and relieved of election responsibilities in the Kayamkulam constituency.

The CPI(M) targeted the UDF over the remarks.

However, UDF leaders, including Congress candidate M. Liju, condemned Mr. Chakkalassery’s comments.
