The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has been withdrawn with effect from Monday (December 15) in Kerala.
The MCC will, however, remain effective in the whole of the Moothedam grama panchayat in Malappuram and the Pambakuda grama panchayat in Ernakulam district and within the Vizhinjam ward of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation where special elections are to be held following the death of candidates, the State Election Commission (SEC) said.
The MCC had come into force in the State following the November 10 announcement of the 2025 local body elections. But elections were later postponed in three wards including Vizhinjam following the deaths of candidates. The panchayat wards are Payimbadam in Moothedam panchayat and Onakkoor in Pambakkuda panchayat.
State Election Commissioner A. Shajahan said on Monday that the SEC was able to conduct the 2025 local body elections in a “transparent, impartial and peaceful” manner in the State.
He pointed out that a mammoth exercise that began with the delimitation of local body wards, and progressed to the multiple revisions of the electoral rolls had culminated in the two-phased elections held on December 9 and 11 and the counting of votes on December 13. Mr. Shajahan attributed the success of these exercises to the cooperation extended by the voters, political parties, election officials, various government agencies and departments, district administrations and local self government institutions.
