The State Election Commission has allotted symbols to the Kerala Congress (Skaria Thomas), the Secular National Dravida Party (SNDP), and the Socialist Republican Party.

The KC (Skaria Thomas) has been allotted ‘laptop’ as its symbol, while SNDP has been given ‘umbrella.’ The Socialist Republican Party will have ‘ship’ as its symbol. The commission headed by A. Shajahan said on Sunday that it has issued orders making the allotments.

The State Election Commission (SEC) had removed these parties from its list after the Election Commission of India (EC) included them on the list of ‘De-listed political parties.’ But they had approached the Kerala High Court which issued orders, temporarily removing them from the ‘De-listed’ list. The court order stated that the parties can contest in the local body elections and that they should be allotted symbols. It is in this context that the SEC has issued orders allotting them symbols.

The commission said it has allotted the symbols in Table IV of its notification on the allotment of symbols which deals with ‘Free symbols for independent candidates which include the symbols allotted to registered unrecognised political parties that have no member or members in the Kerala Legislative Assembly or in any of the local bodies in Kerala.’ The SEC has issued a draft notification on September 19 allotting symbols to political parties for the 2025 elections to local bodies in the State.

The commission also noted that the National Peoples Party, which is listed as a national party, has been allotted ‘book,’ as its symbol, which is the same allotted to it by the EC.

For the national parties, which find mention in Table 1 of the notification, the symbols are as follows: Aam Aadmi Party (Broom), Bahujan Samaj Party (Elephant), Bharatiya Janata Party (Lotus), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (Hammer, Sickle and Star), and Indian National Congress (Hand). Table 2 of the notification mentions the symbols for the State parties, and Table 3, the symbols allotted to State parties of other States and Union Territories and registered unrecognised political parties having representation in the Kerala Assembly or in any of local bodies in Kerala.
