The State government on Tuesday handed over ₹17 lakh to the parents of Titto Thomas, a health worker from Mangaluru who has been in coma after contracting Nipah encephalitis.

The money allocated from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund was given to T.C. Thomas and Eliyamma, his parents, by Thottathil Raveendran, MLA.

Titto, 26, has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode for the past two years. He contracted the disease while treating a Nipah patient at the same hospital where he was a nurse, in August 2023. Though he recovered later and rejoined duty, his condition worsened by December that year. He was diagnosed with Nipah encephalitis, a relapse of the infection, subsequently.

The hospital is providing free treatment to him.
