Kerala’s Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan on Tuesday filed a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) and the State Police Chief (SPC) demanding an investigation into a letter being circulated on social media allegedly using his forged letterhead, purporting to be sent to the KPCC president regarding the UDF’s candidate selection.

In the complaint, Mr. Satheesan alleged that it was “a fabricated document, bearing my forged letterhead and signature”, which is being widely circulated across social media platforms. The contents of the letter are misleading and appear to be deliberately designed to create confusion among Congress party workers and the general public during the ongoing election period.

Such malicious dissemination of false information not only misuses the identity of a constitutional functionary but also has the potential to vitiate the electoral atmosphere, misguide voters, and disrupt the democratic process. This act constitutes a violation of the Model Code of Conduct as well as relevant provisions of election law and cyber regulations, he said in the complaint.

In view of the seriousness of the issue, an immediate inquiry has to be initiated into the origin and circulation of the “forged letter”, the complaint said.

He also sought to direct the authorities, including the cyber cell, to identify and take action against those responsible, along with removing the misleading content from social media platforms.
