The Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Palakkad, Kerala, on Tuesday (January 27, 2026) sentenced Shafi Parambil, MP, to imprisonment until the court adjourned and imposed a fine of ₹1,000 in connection with a case relating to the national highway blockade in Palakkad in 2022.

The court issued an arrest warrant against Mr. Parambil last week after he had repeatedly failed to appear before it. The Vadakara MP appeared before the court on Tuesday, following which he was detained until the court is adjourned at 5 p.m.

The case was registered by the Kasaba police on June 24, 2022 after Mr. Parambil led a road blockade at Chandranagar in protest against the attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s office in Wayanad by Students Federation of India (SFI) workers. Mr. Parambil was then the MLA of Palakkad.

Sarin is 9th accused

P. Sarin, who was then the Congress’ State digital media cell convener and later shifted to the CPI(M) after the Congress denied him a seat in the Palakkad Assembly byelection in October 2024, was the ninth accused in the case. However, he had appeared before the court and accepted the punishment.
