Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Sunday inaugurated the ₹506.48 crore Vattiyurkavu junction development project, which involves major road works within Thiruvananthapuram city. He also launched a project for the rehabilitation of traders who gave up land for the project. Mr. Vijayan said that the State government has in the last ten years implemented projects worth ₹1.16 lakh funded through Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) for improvement of basic infrastructure.

“The Vattiyurkavu junction development project will give a fillip to the basic infrastructure development of the entire capital city. The project is a result of the government’s understanding that the allied regions should develop along with the capital city. With this, a long-standing demand of the residents of Vattiyurkavu and beyond will become a reality. Similar developmental projects are ongoing all across Kerala,” he said.

Mr. Vijayan lauded the several traders who readily gave up their livelihood for the development project. He said that the government spent ₹89 crore to acquire 2.31 acre land for the rehabilitation of traders. The Vattiyurkavu area will turn into a prominent commercial hub in the capital once the junction development project is completed, he said.

Vattiyurkavu MLA V.K. Prasanth, who presided over the function, presented the various elements of the rehabilitation project.

The Vattiyurkavu junction development project involves the development of the 10.8-km stretch from Sasthamangalam- Vattiyurkavu-Mannarakkonam-Peroorkada and from there to Mukkola and Vazhayila. The road will be developed with a width of 18.5 m. The land acquisition proceedings have already been completed in the first reach from Sasthamangalam to Mannarakkonam and in the second reach from Mannarakkonam to Peroorkada.

An amount of ₹415.34 crore was spent on land acquisition for the two stretches, while an amount of ₹28.69 crore will be spent on the renovation of the first reach and an amount of ₹24.50 crore on the renovation of the second reach. The land acquisition proceedings for the third reach from Mannarakkonam to Vazhayila is ongoing, for which ₹212.91 crore is expected to be spent. An amount of ₹13.63 crore has been allocated for shifting the electric, drinking water and sewerage lines in the existing road.
