Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday signalled that he would not shy away from taking up the gauntlet thrown down by Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan for a face-to-face debate on the ten years of Left Democratic Front (LDF) governance.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Vijayan listed his government’s achievements and expressed a willingness to engage in debate, though he did not mention Mr. Satheesan specifically. He showcased the Vizhinjam port project, NH-66 expansion, distribution of land titles, uninterrupted power, enhanced social welfare pension coverage, and critical infrastructure development as the LDF government’s signature achievements in a progress report card format.
Mr. Vijayan’s Facebook post seemed a riposte to Mr. Satheesan’s bid to up the ante in the rhetorical battle at the hustings, terming Mr. Vijayan’s claims about LDF governance as election-era hyperbole propped up by slick advertising on conventional and social media.
Mr. Satheesan had repeatedly dared Mr. Vijayan to prove the LDF’s case for a third consecutive term in power in a one-to-one at a time and place decided by the Chief Minister.
‘Choose time, place’
Mr. Satheesan stated in Ernakulam that he felt privileged to engage in a direct debate with Mr. Vijayan. “The Chief Minister reserves the right to choose the time and place of the debate. I am happy to debate about development, governance, the Sabarimala gold theft, and the LDF’s governance in general,” he stated.
Mr. Satheesan said he would also debate about the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) “electoral deal”, the LDF’s “newfound love” for the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI), the cost of living crisis, human-wildlife conflict and other charges mentioned in the UDF’s rapsheet against the government.
‘Belated gesture’
Mr. Vijayan welcomed Mr. Satheesan’s Facebook post about the latter’s willingness to debate “as a welcome but belated gesture”. Mr. Vijayan said the UDF had squandered every opportunity to discuss matters of public importance in the Assembly. He said the UDF obstructed meaningful debate, fearing that Treasury benches would expose their lies with facts and figures.
Mr. Vijayan said the UDF failed to put the government in the dock during the final sitting of the 15th Assembly, an opportunity, he stated, no Opposition would let pass.
“The UDF could have moved a motion of no confidence to expose what they perceived was wrong with the government. The Opposition let several opportunities to serve notices for adjournment debates pass. Instead, they resorted to mob tactics, including stonewalling proceedings and dodging discussions, including Budget debates,” he said.
