Ambulances arrive at the TVK meeting venue in Karur where many were killed in a stampede on Saturday

The Karur police on Tuesday (September 30, 2025) arrested M.C. Pounraj, the Karur central town secretary of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), in connection with the stampede at party president and actor Vijay’s rally on September 27, which claimed 41 lives.
Mr. Pounraj had allegedly sheltered Karur West district secretary V.P. Mathiyazhagan at his residence in Gujiliamparai. Mr. Mathiyazhagan, the first accused in the case, was picked up by the police on Monday (September 29).
Police sources said Mr. Pounraj has also been named as an accused in the primary case registered by the Karur Town police.
Both Mr. Mathiyazhagan and Mr. Pounraj were produced before a court in Karur on Tuesday.
