The Director General-Inspector General of Police (DG-IGP), Karnataka, has issued fresh orders implementing the State government’s decision to overhaul the existing orderly system in the Police Department and introduce an alternative arrangement in place of deploying police personnel as orderlies.
The order, issued in compliance with multiple government communications culminating in Government Order dated January 12, 2026, provides for the creation of 373 follower (attendant) posts in the Civil Police, subject to the abolition of an equal number of posts in the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP).
Under the revised policy, police personnel will no longer be assigned as orderlies to senior officers. Instead, followers will be engaged- primarily through outsourcing- with wages fixed in accordance with minimum wage norms and subject to conditions laid down in the March 8, 2017 government order.

As per the new arrangement, Director General of Police (DGPs) and Additional Director General of Police (ADGPs) will be allowed three followers, Inspector-General of Police (IGPs) two followers, Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), Superintendent of Police (SP) and Commandants one follower each. In the case of the DG&IGP, six follower posts will continue as per the 2017 order, with a “no dual benefit” condition.
The government has also revised the monthly orderly allowance payable to senior officers who engage outsourced personnel. The updated rates range from ₹13,930 to ₹19,900 per orderly, depending on rank, with total monthly ceilings specified accordingly.
Payment of the follower allowance will be processed only after confirmation that police personnel currently deployed as orderlies have been relieved from such duties. Unit heads have been directed to submit compliance reports.
As Civil Police units currently do not have filled follower posts and recruitment rules are yet to be finalised, temporary arrangements have been made by reallocating followers from the KSRP units.
The directive reiterates that the longstanding practice of assigning regular police personnel as orderlies stands discontinued with immediate effect. The reform is part of broader administrative restructuring within the State police aimed at optimising manpower deployment and ensuring that trained police personnel are utilised for core policing functions rather than personal staff duties.
