Karnataka government employees advised to wear khadi on first Saturdays of every month

In a move aimed at promoting traditional attire and supporting the State-run Khadi and Village Industries Board, the Karnataka government has advised its employees to wear khadi on the first Saturday every month. 

The decision was taken at a meeting held at the Vidhana Soudha on Thursday chaired by Chief Secretary Shalini Rajneesh, in the presence of State Government Employees’ Association president C.S. Shadakshari and officials of the Khadi and Village Industries Board. A government circular in this regard was issued later on Thursday.

Mr. Shadakshari told The Hindu that the move is aimed at encouraging the use of khadi products and fostering a preference for swadeshi clothing among government staff.

“Following the meeting, we have issued an advisory. This decision will also apply to employees of government-owned corporations, boards, authorities, universities, and aided institutions,” he said.

He said government employees would be required to purchase khadi garments only from government-run outlets. In addition to the existing discount offered on khadi products, the board has decided to extend a special discount of 5% to government staff, he said.

As per the decision, male employees can wear khadi shirts and trousers or overcoats, while women can opt for khadi or khadi silk saris, or khadi churidars. 

Mr. Shadakshari said the advisory will come into effect from April 21, which is observed as Government Employees’ Day.

Alongside the promotion of khadi, the meeting also discussed various other welfare measures for employees. To supply essential commodities and daily-use goods at concessional rates, a proposal to establish a Government Employees’ Canteen through Mysore Sales International Limited (MSIL), on the lines of Defence canteens, was mooted.

“Also, the additional 5% special discount currently provided by the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation (KSIC) to IAS officers for the purchase of silk saris and fabrics will be extended to all State government officers and employees. The proposals are likely to be included in the upcoming State Budget,” he added.
