The Kannur Corporation aims to ensure comprehensive development across all its 56 divisions, Mayor P. Indira said on Friday. She was speaking at a Meet the Press event organised by the Kannur Press Club.

The Mayor said the previous council had successfully implemented the project to provide safe drinking water to all households. The sewage treatment plant at Padannapalam would be expanded as a model to other wards. Along with the existing inorganic waste management system, a bio-waste treatment plant is also under consideration, and a policy decision would be taken after discussions with all stakeholders.

Renovation works of Jawahar stadium would begin at the earliest, she said, adding that that the local MP had shown special interest in the project. Streetlights would be installed by extending power lines in wards where such facilities are lacking.

A roadside rest centre would be set up at Payyambalam, while voluntary organisation would be roped in to establish public toilets at intervals of 2 km. A public canteen under the Kudumbashree would soon be opened at Parakkandy. To address complaints related to the Payyambalam crematorium, a seminar with public participation would be held within six months before commencing construction of a modern facility.

The Mayor also said the Corporation planned to introduce a faecal sludge treatment system and launch a diaper collection scheme. Though action had been taken against street dogs menace in the city, interventions by animal welfare groups were posing challenges, she noted.

Stating that tax revenue remained the Corporation’s primary source of income, the Mayor said commercial complexes were needed to boost revenue.

Shortage of officials had severely affected the functioning of the Corporation, she said, adding that tax collection and timely completion of projects remained major challenges.
