The work on the Kannammoola-Ayyankali Nagar-Nellikkuzhy road in the capital, expected to be taken up soon by the Public Works department, is expected to bring solace to several families living near the Amayizhanjan canal. The project includes the road starting from Kannammoola stretching to Nellikkuzhy bridge with an approximate length of 1.5 km along the bank of the Amayizhanjan canal.
Residents of the area have been facing difficulties due to the road, which has been in a state of disrepair for a long time. Autorickshaw drivers as well as food delivery workers have generally been reluctant to venture into the road. Following local protests, the potholes were filled up using sand, but the stopgap arrangement did not make much of a difference.
Prone to flooding
The Corporation road is prone to frequent flooding due to its low-lying nature. Additionally, the subgrade soil beneath the existing roads was identified as clayey, causing instability and damage. The Public Works department conducted a detailed soil subgrade investigation. Based on the recommendations in the study, work estimated at ₹4.95 crore has been proposed.
The proposed work includes the removal of 50 cm of clayey soil and its replacement with 50 cm of fresh soil, which will be levelled and compacted. The road structure will consist of multiple layers, including a granular sub base, wet mix macadam and mix seal surfacing. Provision for side drains has been included in the estimate to ensure proper stormwater flow and prevent flooding. Also, provisions for cross drain at every 500 m are provided towards the Amayizhanjan canal for the discharge of storm water.
