A person convicted of raping a minor girl has been sentenced to undergo Rigorous Imprisonment for twenty years, besides payment of ₹5000 as fine. The court has also directed the Sstate government to pay ₹5 lakh as compensation to the victim.

B.S. Mohammad Basha (41) of Sugamanchipalli in Jammalamadugu mandal of Kadapa district was accused of hoodwinking a minor girl with a false promise of marriage. After luring her to elope from home, he ‘formalised’ the wedding by tying a yellow thread around her neck and sexually exploited her.

Later, the duo settled in Anantapur district and he started working as a lorry driver. Upon knowing that the girl’s parents had filed a police case, he brought her back and left her at home.

The then Sub Divisional Police Officer (Jammalamadugu) M. Nagaraju, who inquired the case, got the accused arrested and filed the charge sheet.

The POCSO Court judge T. Kesava on Wednesday sentenced the convict to undergo rigorous imprisonment for twenty years under the POCSO Act. In the same vein, he also directed the state to pay ₹5 lakh as compensation for the victim.

Superintendent of Police Nachiket Vishwanath Shelke appreciated the efforts of the concerned police officials and the Public Prosecutor K. Venugopal in taking the case to a logical end.
