The JSW Group on Wednesday (May 27, 2026) started construction of the blast furnace of its proposed 13.2 million tonne per annum Integrated Steel Plant at Paradeep in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district, one of the largest investments undertaken by the company.

According to the company, the Paradeep Integrated Steel Plant will be developed in phases with a planned capacity of 13.2 MTPA and an estimated investment of about ₹65,000 crore in phases.

“Spread across nearly 2,950 acres, the project is strategically located on Odisha’s coastline, offering strong port connectivity, efficient access to raw materials and robust logistics infrastructure to serve both domestic and international markets,” it said.

In early 2000, South Korean steel major POSCO had proposed to set up a steel plant at the same place. However, the project could not take off due to local resistance.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Chairman and Managing Director of JSW Group Sajjan Jindal were present on the occasion.

“The JSW Steel will invest a total of ₹1.25 lakh crore in this project— the largest investment in Odisha’s history. The state-of-the-art plant, to be implemented in two phases, will produce around 24 million tonnes of steel annually. It will also include a 12 million tonne cement plant, a 900 MW captive power system, and a dedicated jetty,” Odisha Government said.

“A project for which people had waited for two decades and which had only seen a symbolic foundation laying two years ago has now been fast-tracked under the new ‘double-engine’ government,” said Mr. Majhi. Odisha CM said the project is likely start steel production by 2028 itself.

Speaking on the occasion, he highlighted grounding of different industrial projects. Mr. Majhi referred to the success of Trimetro Garments in Khordha, where production began within a year of foundation laying.

Odisha CM said his government had approved 433 projects involving investments worth ₹8.5 lakh crore, expected to generate over 5 lakh jobs.

“So far, ground-breaking has been completed for 148 projects, creating employment for around 2.37 lakh youth,” said Mr. Majhi.

Describing the occasion as historic for the industrial development, Industries Minister Sampad Chandra Swain said that the long-cherished dream of the local people is now set to become a reality due to the decisive and transparent policies of the government.
