CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam on Thursday urged the State government to convene a tripartite meeting involving broiler chicken farmers, poultry companies, and the Animal Husbandry Department to ensure fair wages for farmers.
In a statement issued, he said poultry farmers across the State had demanded an increase in rearing costs, and their ongoing struggle had led to a rise in chicken prices.
Mr. Shanmugam said the last such meeting was held in September 2013, following which the rearing cost was increased by 15% that year and by a further 5% in 2014. “The government should immediately arrange a meeting to resolve the crisis,” he added.
