Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK) president M.H. Jawahirullah on Thursday criticised the Union government for releasing a commemorative coin and a postal stamp to mark the centenary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

In a statement, he said the RSS had never accepted the Indian Constitution or the country’s sovereignty. He asserted that the portrayal of uniformed RSS volunteers as having taken part in the 1963 Republic Day parade on the stamp “amounted to distortion of history”.

According to him, though the 1963 parade, held in the wake of the Indo-China war, was attended by over 1 lakh people, claims that former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had invited RSS volunteers to participate were “a gross falsification of history.”

He pointed out that the RSS had been banned six times since Independence. “It is highly condemnable that the Prime Minister has misused his office to glorify such an organisation,” he added.
