Jadavpur University on Friday (August 21, 2026) lodged police complaints over the violence that broke out on its campus, officials said.

One of the complaints was lodged over a crowd’s entry to the campus at midnight, the attempt to damage the main gate, setting on fire festoons and locking some students inside one of the buildings, they said.

“The complaint sought an investigation, and asked the police to prevent recurrence of such incidents on the campus,” an official of the State-run varsity said.

“Another complaint was lodged in connection with scaling the varsity’s gate number 4, damaging the historic emblem of the varsity, crafted by legendary painter Nandalal Bose, and the pelting of stones and water bottles,” he said.

A clash broke out between members of ABVP and Left-leaning student groups at the varsity early on Thursday (August 20, 2026), with both sides accusing each other of bringing outsiders into the campus.

Several students were injured in the clash, and some of them were taken to a hospital, officials said, adding that fire was set at several places on the main campus in south Kolkata.

The confrontation started over a meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU) on Wednesday (August 19, 2026) and continued late into the night.

On Thursday afternoon (August 20, 2026), ABVP supporters breached police barricades and reached the locked entrance of the varsity’s gate number 4, while Left-leaning students gathered in large numbers inside the campus to resist the attempted entry.

A group of SFI supporters also clashed with the police outside the university at the 8B bus stand area, after they attempted to breach security barricades and march towards gate number 4.
