In an apparent race with the Tipra Motha Party for prominence in State politics, Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), a junior partner of the BJP-led coalition in Tripura, will hold a demonstration in New Delhi, pressing a demand for the augmentation of an autonomous district council through amendment of Article 125 of the Constitution in Parliament.

Party leaders said they had not given up the demand for a separate tribal State but primarily sought the setting up of Tipra Territorial Council in line with the Bodo Territorial Council.

The leaders were speaking here on Sunday (November 30, 2025) after constituting a new central executive committee of the party. They informed that the stir in Delhi next month would be held in alliance with the National Federation of New States (NFNS) of which IPFT is a constituent.

IPFT, which has sole representation in the State Assembly and the Cabinet headed by Chief Minister Manik Saha, does not have much political clout in the State owing to the surge of the Tipra Motha with Greater Tipraland plank. To make itself relevant, the party has begun raising demands similar to that of the Motha.

IPFT announced that it would hold a ‘students and youth rally’ in Agartala next month, demanding Roman script in place of Bangla script for the Kokborok language in CBSE and State board-run secondary and higher secondary examinations. The date and venue of the rally is subject to approval of the police administration, the party leaders added.

The script controversy resurfaced a day after Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Debbarman expressed utter concern over the resentment in the indigenous community for not allowing answer sheets in Roman script. He sought immediate resolution of the contentious issue.
