Roads dug up and left unattended to for months in colonies across the city are testing the patience of vehicle riders by slowing the movement of traffic.
While the ire of the city residents about the condition of main roads is visible all over the social media, little attention is paid to the condition of internal roads, which is going from bad to worse over the past one year.
Major infrastructural works, such as laying of the stormwater pipelines as part of the Strategic Nala Development Programme, and drainage lines, has left several stretches bumpy and unmotorable.
A case in point are the colony roads in Tarnaka, between Lalapet and Nacharam main roads, which were dug up for laying of pipelines, but not re-carpeted. The stretch continuously witnesses two wheeler and four wheeler traffic to and from Lalapet, which calls for immediate repairs.
“This stretch was never hassle free since I had known. It was either speed bumps, or sunken manhole covers, or vehicles parked on the side which hamper the ride. Now, it has become worse, the whole stretch has become unnegotiable. My car swings like it is on a ship,” says Srinivasa Ramakrishna, a regular commuter.
The RTC Colony main road and colony roads around it in Chintalkunta too have been heavily dug up, but not re-carpeted for several months. Absence of local area representatives since the dissolution of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s council has not helped the matters.
“The road is very busy here, and vehicles bouncing over the road even at low speeds could be dangerous, because it’s challenging task for the driver to steer around. The road turnings have become especially difficult for two vehicles in opposite directions,” shared Mohd. Quadri, an auto driver from the Jahangir Nagar Colony.
Similar complaints are shared from areas such as Hitech City, Gachibowli, Attapur, Rajendranagar, Nizampet, Bachupally, and other areas.
“Every internal road is damaged, dug up and looks like a war zone — went to Madhapur-Kakatiya Hills, Ayyappa Society and Gayatrinagar yesterday — total neglect. Just cosmetic touches for some main roads,” posted Kishore, a user on the social media platform X.
“I’m writing this post out of frustration and and curiosity. Why Hyderabad roads are digging [dug up], wherever you go you can see a patch. Entire Hyderabad looks like that. In some areas after digging they are not even properly repairing. Can someone tell me why they doing like that?” posted a Reddit user.
